A Free Memory Café at UIndy Offers Connection, Creativity, and a Look at New Dementia Technology

When someone you love is diagnosed with dementia, life can begin to feel a little smaller. Activities that once seemed simple may become more challenging. Families may find themselves adjusting routines, managing appointments, and trying to understand what the future might look like. Caregivers often spend so much time caring for someone else that they have fewer opportunities to connect with others who understand their experience.

That's why we're always glad to share opportunities that bring people living with dementia and their families together.

The University of Indianapolis Center for Aging & Community is hosting a free Memory Café on Thursday, November 12, 2026, offering a welcoming opportunity for individuals living with dementia and their care partners to enjoy art, conversation, and community. While Vick Law is not affiliated with or sponsoring this event, we wanted to share it with the families we serve.

What Is a Memory Café?

A Memory Café is a gathering designed to provide social connection and enjoyable activities for people experiencing memory changes and the family members, friends, or care partners who support them.

For someone living with dementia, opportunities to participate in familiar activities and connect with others can be meaningful. For caregivers, spending time with people navigating similar experiences can provide encouragement and a welcome change from everyday responsibilities.

The upcoming event will include art therapy activities, refreshments, and conversation.

Guests will also have an opportunity to meet a team from Tandem Robotics, which is developing a robot designed for people living with dementia. Attendees can see the technology and share their thoughts about what might actually be helpful at home. We appreciate opportunities where families and caregivers can contribute their experiences to conversations about future dementia care.

Why Dementia Awareness Matters to Estate Planning

At Vick Law, we work with families who are navigating the legal and financial questions that often accompany aging and changes in cognitive health. A dementia diagnosis can be frightening, especially when families are unsure what decisions need to be made or how quickly they need to act. One of the most important things we encourage families to understand is that a dementia diagnosis does not automatically mean someone can no longer make their own legal decisions. Decision-making capacity depends on the individual, the decision involved, and the circumstances.

For someone who has recently received a diagnosis, this may be an important time to review existing estate planning documents and discuss future wishes while they can still participate meaningfully in those decisions. That might include establishing or reviewing a financial power of attorney, appointing a healthcare representative, preparing healthcare directives, or updating a will or trust.

Families may also need to consider how financial responsibilities will be managed as the condition progresses and whether long-term care or Medicaid planning should be part of the conversation. When appropriate documents are established early, families may have clearer guidance about who can act and what their loved one wants. Waiting until a crisis occurs can limit available options and, in some situations, lead to the need for court involvement.

Supporting the Person and the Family

Dementia care involves much more than medical appointments and legal documents. The goal should always to help someone maintain dignity, relationships, meaningful activities, and as much independence as possible. This can be a difficult task because tis critical to support the people who care for them as well.

We know that caregivers often carry a tremendous responsibility. They may be balancing work, raising children, managing household finances, and caring for a parent or spouse whose needs are changing. Community programs like this Memory Café can provide opportunities to spend time together outside the routines of caregiving.

We believe those opportunities are worth sharing.

How Vick Law Helps Families Navigate Dementia Planning

Vick Law serves individuals and families throughout Greenwood, Center Grove, Johnson County, and the Indianapolis area with estate planning, elder law, and Medicaid planning. For families facing a dementia diagnosis, our role is to help them understand the legal planning options available and consider what arrangements may be appropriate for their circumstances.

We can assist with financial powers of attorney, healthcare planning documents, wills, trusts, and discussions about long-term care planning. When a loved one can no longer make certain decisions and appropriate authority is not already in place, we can also help families explore whether guardianship or another legal arrangement may be necessary. These are personal decisions, and every family's circumstances are different.

Our goal is to help families approach them with greater understanding and a plan that reflects their loved one's needs and wishes. If you or someone you know is caring for a loved one with dementia, we hope you'll consider attending the November 12 Memory Café. It may be a pleasant morning of creativity, conversation, and connection.
