Indiana PathWays for Aging Program: What Hoosiers Need to Know

For many Hoosiers, planning for aging and managing Medicaid services can be a daunting and confusing process. With the launch of the Indiana PathWays for Aging program, the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) aims to simplify this journey for thousands of Hoosiers aged 60 and over. However, understanding and navigating these new changes can still present challenges. At Vick Law, P.C., we’re here to help you understand how these new programs affect you and how to make the most of the services available.

Complexity and Access

One of the main concerns for aging Hoosiers and their families is the complexity of navigating Medicaid services and ensuring timely access to care. The previous system required individuals to manage various services and supports on their own, often leading to confusion and delays in receiving necessary care. Additionally, the transition from the Aged and Disabled Waiver to the new PathWays Waiver and Health and Wellness Waiver adds another layer of complexity. With limited slots available and a waitlist in place, ensuring you or your loved one secures a spot can be a stressful process.

How the Indiana PathWays for Aging Program Helps

The Indiana PathWays for Aging program is designed to streamline the process and provide a single point of contact for Medicaid services. Individuals enrolled in PathWays will have a care coordinator to assist them in accessing services and finding resources. This program aims to allow more Hoosiers to age in their homes or communities, surrounded by family and friends, while also managing the rising costs of providing Medicaid coverage to the aging population.

Key Features of the PathWays Program:

  • Single Point of Contact: Care coordinators to assist with accessing services and resources.
  • Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Waiver: Additional services for those needing nursing facility-level care.
  • No Overall Waitlist: Although there is a waitlist for waiver services, the overall PathWays program does not have a waitlist.

The Transition and New Waivers

With the launch of PathWays, the Aged and Disabled Waiver has ended, and two new waivers have been introduced:

  • PathWays Waiver: For individuals aged 60 and older, with 39,842 slots available.
  • Health and Wellness Waiver: For individuals 59 and younger, with 16,127 slots available.

Currently, there are thousands of Hoosiers on the waiting list for these new waivers. FSSA plans to invite a set number of individuals each month to continue the process of receiving services, aiming to make the transition as smooth as possible.
